ABSTRACT: Adopting a micro-meso-macro framework is useful for analysing creative and innovative cities. This framework adopts an interdisciplinary approach to understand the dynamics of creative activities in urban environments. At the micro level, individual personality traits, particularly openness to experience, are important, as well as environmental stimuli such as diversifying experiences. The meso level focuses on neighbourhood attributes that foster connections, such as mixed land uses, high densities, and cultural diversity. At the macro level, cultural values and institutional frameworks are important. Open environments cultivate creativity and encompass individualistic cultural values and the rule of law. Spatial design considerations are important at all levels of analysis. As a general rule, smaller, more intimate spaces tend to encourage openness, interaction, and creativity. We can summarize the policy implications as three short slogans: leave space out, allow activities to take place, and let people in.
